Announcing... A Fall Musicals Blogathon!

What ho! What ho! *scattering confetti*

So, as ye can see, I've decided to just go for this musicals blogathon thing. I think it has the potential to be whole heaps of fun, but I can most definitely use your help spreading the word. *pretty please....?????* (Well, I mean, really it's up to all of you to make the party delightfully party-ish. ;D *clearing throat politely*)

As you can see, I'm narrowing it down to any musicals with either Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire (leaving options for highlighting other names or themes in the future if this becomes any sort of annual thing), but that should provide y'all with lots of options and ideas. As far as entries it can be pretty much anything to do with the theme: so movie reviews, character studies, panegyrics on the score, costume studies, whatever you can dream up!

Just leave your plan/idea here in the comments and I'll add it to this post so folks can see what you're hoping to contribute. Unless someone really has their heart set on it, preferably we wouldn't double any titles, but that rule's subject to adjustment. There's no limit on how many posts you contribute, so don't feel dampened if you're feeling really inspired.

Planned posts:

Anchors Aweigh (1945) from Heidi @ Along the Brandywine

Summer Stock (1950) from Tiffany @ Pure Entertainment Society

On a Fred Astaire costume from Tiffany @ Pure Entertainment Society

The Pirate (1948) from Carissa (Regency Woman) @ Musings of an Introvert

Take Me Out to the Ball Game (1949) from Sally Silverscreen @ 18 Cinema Lane

Funny Face (1957) from Sally Silverscreen @ 18 Cinema Lane

10 Favorite Gene Kelly Movies from Hamlette (Rachel) @ Hamlette's Soliloquy

Second Chorus (1940) from Rebecca @ Taking Up Room

Silk Stockings (1957) from MovieCritic @ Movies Meet Their Match

Admittedly, folks are busy and this has been such a weird time, I'm not sure if y'all will feel like joining in, but by the same token a little song and dance may be just the ticket. ;) Won't you join me?

P.S. Please remember to grab a button and share far and wide! Thank'ee kindly!

(P.P.S. Also, you know how it is when you've been staring at a word too long and everything starts looking wrong? Usually I'd always spell glamor thusly, but my computer kept changing it to the British spelling all the time and I didn't feel like fighting it + it does make a lot of sense. You're all ok with it as is, right? ;P)

  1. Dear Heidi,

It's nice to meet you! My name is Tiffany Brannan of the Pure Entertainment Preservation Society (http://www.pureentertainmentpreservationsociety.wordpress.com). I would love to join this blogathon! It's a great idea for a topic. I would like to join with a review of "Summer Stock" from 1950. I also would like to write about a costume worn by Fred Astaire in some film. I will choose which one later. Is that alright? I'll put the poster on my blog to spread the word!

By the way, I would like to invite you to join my upcoming blogathon, The Joe Pasternak Blogathon: https://pureentertainmentpreservationsociety.wordpress.com/2020/08/21/announcing-the-joe-pasternak-blogathon/. It is dedicated to the films produced by Joe Pasternak, many of which are musicals! I hope you can join.

    Yours Hopefully,

    Tiffany Brannan

    1. Hi Tiffany!

And great, so glad to have you! I've added your planned posts here and looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Thanks for sharing the button and for the invite! I do have a number of prior commitments so not sure on time constraints, but I'll see if I can come up with something... :)

  2. Hi, Heidi, it's been a long time! I'd like to review "The Pirate" with Gene Kelly. It's been a long time since I've watched it and this gives me an excuse. :)

  4. Haha, I think 'glamour' looks perfectly fine to me. ;) That is, that's how I would normally spell it anyways, and I ain't British. XD

I wish I could join in this party, but I don't have a whole lot of time for writing posts right now, and I actually don't if I've watched any old films with Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire! :O I don't have access to any either, to my knowledge. But I will look forward to the posts eagerly and applaud you from the sidelines. Also, I think I really *should* try to get my hands on at least one of these films, but I'm even learning tap dancing! (The old fashioned style.)

    1. Gabby,
Haha, oh good! Whew, that makes me feel better. XD

Awww, oh no! It'd be so lovely to have you, but I understand if it doesn't work out and look forward to hearing your thoughts anyway. I don't know what your internet's like, but I did find what looks like the entirety of Singing in the Rain in nice resolution free on YouTube. Musical wise it's definitely one of the major classics you could start with. I know I'm replying here rather late, but if you're interested I can share the link. <3

    2. Gabby,
A quick p.s. -- it has been quite a while since I last saw it and, personally, I remember skipping a couple of the numbers, but due to its famous standing it should be easy to find a quick content advisory. ;)

    1. Hamlette,
Yay! I knoooow... I'm trying not to have a delay story every time I post lately, but between Life stuff and my internet being a big grump and flat out refusing to work at all, it's been a challenge lately. Just hoping it keeps itself pulled together for the rest of this week. xD

  7. Hi, Heidi! I'd like to write about "Second Chorus," if that's OK. My blog is Taking Up Room (http://takinguproom.wordpress.com). Thanks, this looks so cool.

  8. Are you accepting previously published reviews, if so can I add Xanadu with Gene Kelly?

    1. Gill,
Glad you're interested in joining! Hm, I'd rather we have new posts (so people can find the blogathon etc). Could you write a newer post (maybe even just a few paragraphs elaborating on something you might not have been able to talk about in your review or some other specific aspect from the film) and include a link to your prior review there, and then enter the party with that post? Just an idea.

    2. Sorry, I don not have time to do that as I have an important exam on the 7th, but I look forward to reading the entries.

    3. Realweegiemidget,
Oh that does make it tricky. Well maybe see how your next few days go? If you're tight on time it needn't be an in-depth post. You could just mention the event is happening and link to your older review. But it's totally up to you... Glad you're looking forward to it!

I'd love to hear your thoughts and look forward to further confabulation. Please just be courteous to one and all. Oh, and I love thoughts on old posts, so comment away!

(Also of late -- what with time being finite, and Life Happening + managing multiple blogs and computer issues and all that -- I sometimes have to alternate between creating new content and replying to comments, but rest assured I'm thrilled to hear from each and every one of you and always hope to reply thoughtfully in full ASAP. <3)
