Beyond the Mask Premiere and A New Link!

On Wednesday, I got to go see the theater premiere of Beyond the Mask (by the Burns family)! A review will probably be coming along here once the DVD is released, but meanwhile I'll just say it was really good. A redemption story (you know I LOVE those), the inner and outer conflicts were handled and tied together excellently. Here are a few tantalizing pictures:

I'm also in the process of bringing some fun new things to my author website. So far I've added a list of some of my favorite storytellers and also 18 of my favorite films (the absolute top of my top favorites). ;) The link for that is here. Enjoy and let me know what you think!

    1. Oh, and I looked at your favorite movie list-I LOVE it! Could you tell me about The Princess Bride? How appropriate is it? I've heard much about it and it looks so enjoyable but I was never quite sure about content or anything. :)

    2. Natalie,
Yes, indeed! You know, they actually just released some more exciting information on BtM, so I think I'll actually put up another post (today if I can) or Monday. :) But meanwhile, here's a quick link to the website: http://beyondthemaskmovie.com/home. Yes, more definitely coming soon! :)

And I'm SO glad you liked my list! Yes, yes, yes....Princess Bride. It's fairytale/humor (kind of turning "fairytale" on it's head, but still respecting the genre -- if that makes sense :P), and it's been about a year since I last saw it, but I really don't recall any bad language and there aren't any indecent scenes. There's a "torture" scene that gets a little intense (but you can see it coming) and there's also a magician-type figure (who can't really do anything), but that's about all I can think of that might be mentionable. It's definitely humor (so it depends if you like that ;)), but I'd say it's a good family friendly film. :)

    3. Thank you for the link! I check out the website and watched the trailer-it looks so exciting! Did you say somewhere in a comment or post that you know someone who worked on the film? Or perhaps that was someone else who said that! :)

Thanks for telling me that! Is there a separate version of the film or something because after I left my comment I decided to search for a plugged in review (I sometimes like to get a friend's personal reference as well as the "official" review because sometimes the websites make movies sound worse than they are-so don't think I was dismissing your recommendation! :)) and found this review:
      https://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/the-princess-bride/
They mentioned some negatives that might not be what we want to watch in a movie, so I'm just curious whether you forgot them or if there's perhaps an "edited" version you watched.
Thanks, and hopefully my comment wasn't to confusing! :/

    4. Natalie,
I do know someone who worked on it and was also in it! And yes, it was in the comments here, because Emma was saying she also knows someone involved. :) So yes, very fun!

And okay, about Princess Bride.... Let me think. (And I know, isn't it so annoying when they ramp up the possible objectionable elements in reviews or trailers? I mean, there's so much out there that just flat out shouldn't be watched, it's annoying when something that is fine is unnecessarily ramped up.) But yes (and sorry for not remembering before), but it does have that one expression (I really really think it's only used once) in the final dueling scene. From what you've told me, I think it sounds similar to that one line Scarlet Pimpernel. (It might even be the same expression that's used.) The story overall is pretty intense (so a lot would depend on how "intense" you like things). The most intense part is probably the torture scene (and, like I mentioned, you can see it coming -- and we generally just skip it). Westley's shirt is off in those scenes (when he's a prisoner), but otherwise nobody's remotely in a state of undress. There are several kissy parts, but I feel like they break them off before anything gets really mushy. I'd say the '04 N&S, for instance, is waaaaay more. :) Ummmm. Oh yes, the drinking. In the beginning one character, Inigo, has been rescued from being a drunkard (it's mentioned in passing, but isn't shown) and then later (when he's left alone with nothing) he's obviously been drinking again. For a play by play of that bit, he's sitting outside his hut (kind of tipsy) and the foresters are trying to evict him. After a scuffle, he runs into his friend (the giant) and the giant then sets about restoring him (dipping his head in a bucket of water, etc.) Oh! This would have been simpler....(I'm trying to think of movies we've both seen to reference), but on the drinking end (with the difference that there's swordplay, etc. involved) I would say it's about on a par with the doctor in Stagecoach. Does that make sense?

I hope that all helped some -- let me know if you want to know any more and if you see it! :)

    5. There are two words I would mute out if my kids were watching The Princess Bride. One instance where a kid says "Jesus" as an exclamation of annoyance, and one of a guy calling someone else an SOB. Other than that, nothing particularly objectionable. No low-cut dresses, even. The violence is pretty fakey. I do tend to skip the torture scene, though, just because... my poor, sweet Westley!

    6. Hamlette and Heidi,
Thank you SO much for all your helpful information on TPB! I appreciate it a lot. :) I'm sorry it took me a while to respond back.
And, Heidi, quick question-did you receive my reply email to yours about TPB? Just wanted to make sure. :)
Thank you so much! I will let you know if I see the movie! :)

    7. Natalie,
Yes, I did! And my apologies for not getting back faster, too.... I'm playing email catch-up, so hopefully soon! Also (and this will come up on your dashboard), but I just posted answers to your Random Questions tag as well. I had a lot of fun working on the answers over the past few days! ;)

  3. We got to see the premier of Beyond the Mask on Monday-- it was definitely very impressive. Some of our friends were involved in the making of it, so that was exciting. (In fact, I know the girl on the left in that screenshot of John Rhys-Davies!)

  4. This movie looks cool!

I liked your list of favorite movies, but couldn't find it or a list of favorite authors via your site... am I missing something?

    1. Hamlette,
      It's definitely action-packed! :)

And on Sharing the Journey: yes, I actually just added a couple more favorite movies and tweaked the page a bit. I also just put up a short favorite books list this morning. The "favorite storytellers" is in pictures down the sidebar itself and the favorite books and movies pages are buttons on the sidebar. Can you find them all right now/do they work?

    2. Aha! I see them now. I was looking for pages up above the posts, that's why I missed them.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and look forward to further confabulation. Please just be courteous to one and all. Oh, and I love thoughts on old posts, so comment away!

(Also of late -- what with time being finite, and Life Happening + managing multiple blogs and computer issues and all that -- I sometimes have to alternate between creating new content and replying to comments, but rest assured I'm thrilled to hear from each and every one of you and always hope to reply thoughtfully in full ASAP. <3)
