We can most DEFINITELY have multiple reviews for each title if several people want to do one, but it would be really nice to have at least one for each film. Also, I've seen about half of these. Note, as Cinderella can delightfully cover a huge spectrum (part of the deep running splendor of the story!), here are a few guidelines for any nominations for our particular event:
First, any PG/PG13 titles must be notated as such and no R-rated content.
And (for our current purposes), I'm defining a Cinderella adaptation proper as:
1. The relationship between the Prince and Cinderella has to be central to the story
2. They have to come from different "worlds," so to speak
3. Over the course of the story they meet each other, lose each other, and are reunited
4. There needs to be a ball scene involving some sort of iconic moment (i.e. her coming down a staircase and/or her lost slipper, etc.)
Book Titles ~ allowing for a little wider/metaphorical interpretation
(Again, I haven't read ALL of these, so let me know if you run across anything iffy. :) And this is a starter list, so feel free to suggest lots more titles!)

Oooh, fun! I definitely want to participate! Hmmm, I'd love to take the movie version of Ella Enchanted... as I believe I haven't actually reviewed that one before. Or Ever After, because it's my favorite. Whichever one you need reviewed... really.

Oh, this sounds like SO much fun! I'll see if I'm able to do some reviews, (have to check my crazy schedule :P ) but if there is a possibility of doing it, I'd probably end up doing either Cinderella or Ever After (which is seriously an amazing and beautiful adaption on Cinderella, dontcha think? ;))

An Ordinary Princess by MM Kaye. It is juvenile fiction but absolutely darling.

DeleteThanks so much for all the book recommendations! Is 'An Ordinary Princess' a Cinderella retelling? I was reading up on it and ordered it from the library. And I ordered "Mara." My mom read that book years ago and Egyptology is one of my greatest loves, so thank you for the reminder! I added that one as well as 'Princess of Glass' to the list.

An Ordinary Princess is awesome... but not really a Cinderella retelling. (They appear to have used the song from it for the newest Cinderella movie... but other than that, no real resemblance)

Ahhhh, yes, well... that would be because I totally forgot to post about that issue of Femnista being out. It's out now! You can read it here. My EA article is on page 10. And I realized after writing it that I' not sure I have a whole review of it in me right now -- and I don't think I'll have time to do more than one post for the blogathon. Since it looks like there's no shortage of interest in that one, when I saw that I could see the Mary Pickford version on You Tube, I thot I'd switch it.

Of course it IS, most definitely, now I think about it! It's got the girl and boy from different "worlds," they meet, lose each other, meet again . . . and then there's The Letter and everything ends happily ever after. Gorgeousness.
Livia Rachelle mentioned "The Ordinary Princess"--I'd LOVE to see that one included! It's such a wonderful, wonderful Cinderella story and the illustrations are PERFECTION. It was one of my favorite books as a little girl.

And Persuasion, yes -- yes, indeed. :) I actually touched on the Cinderella theme a little when I did a book review for it here last year. Along with absolutely everything you mentioned, it also has a step-mother figure in Lady Russell (well-meaning, but still misjudging and quite effectively separating Anne and CW) and two pairs of "step-sisters" -- Anne's immediate sisters who undervalue her and the Musgrove sisters who come between her and her prince! :) It's all pretty exciting stuff. ;D
Would you like to do a book review of Persuasion for the party? On the technicality end, I'd be happy to have you do a guest post if you like. :) Just let me know!

2. Rags (A musical, gender-swapped version which is very sweet and catchy)
3. A Cinderella Story, or Another Cinderella Story
Even if none of these movies get chosen to be reviewed, I would strongly recommend them to anybody with a love for Cinderella :)

Wow, three titles! Thank you! :) I added and put you down for TGS and 'Poor Cinderella.' I just had a quick question on 'What a Girl Wants'. I haven't seen it so I was reading up on it and wondering if it's clearly a Cinderella story? It sounds like it very much could be... Are Cinderella and her "prince" (i.e. her romantic interest) central in the story conflict??

DeleteThat's a good question. It's definitely more of a loose retelling. What A Girl Wants is a movie about an American girl, Daphne, who goes to meet her biological father, a British lord. She has to deal with his fiancee and fiancee's daughter (the step-mother/step-daughter figures). There's a ball involved where Daphne fixes up an "ugly" dress her "almost-step-mom" gives her. Romance wise, she falls in love with a sweet guy, Ian, along the way. The romance is a good part of the story, but the central plot mainly revolves around Daphne connecting with her dad. She does get "separated" from Ian when she decides to leave the "blueblood" life and then reunited at the end. It's totally cool if we can't use this one; I've got two other titles after all. ;)

ReplyDeleteIt's actually kind of scary to me how many adaptations I have watched, and I definitely need to read more retellings. What amazes me is that there are so many other Cinderella adaptations and one retelling that I can think of that you did not mention, and you made a huge list. It really shows how this fairy tale has been beloved by everyone for centuries.
I have to watch that Mary Pickford Cinderella it looks so interesting. Is Hamlette going to do a review of it? I saw here name underneath it but there is also a question mark.

YES. The number of retellings and adaptations are mind-boggling. I ended up having to stop searching for new titles myself as there was no way I could get ALL of them out there/available! ;D It's incredible. What were the other titles you thought of?

I was thinking of Rossini's opera of Cerentola and Before Midnight by Cameron Dokey. There is a modern Italian version, also called Cerentola I think, but the girl plays the piano, which I love. There are also very many different German adaptations of Cinderella. There was this one YouTube channel that use to have a ton of different German adaptations, but I'm not sure if it's there anymore.

DeleteThank you!! I added Before Midnight to the post and -- since my sister loves Belle (Dokey's version of Beauty and the Beast) -- I also immediately tried to place a hold on Before Midnight at our library, but unfortunately our current hold list is maxed out. Soon though! ;P
And I haven't navigated many operas... Do you have an online link for one of those specific favorites you mentioned?
I love Dokey's version of Beauty and the Beast too. I have loved all of Dokey's fairy tale retellings that I've read so far. I think she had another retelling published this year, but I haven't looked into it.

YAYSIES!!! :D Okay, so, about my title: Nope, it doesn't have an exclamation mark at the end--I'm sorry, I'm not dreadfully clear about that, am I? ;) The thing is, it DOES have the ellipsis-three-dot thingy, and often people don't include that, so sometimes I include the exclamation mark to try and remind them. Not a great system xD

Now…I know you REALLY don't need any more titles for the party, but…could I also review the 1995 remake of the Sabrina movie? It's a Cinderella-ish tale, and while it has a leetle bit of content, I'd explain all that in the review (caveats, y'know). Anywho, would that work?

ReplyDeleteBut I'm going to choose the "Faerie Tale Theatre" version of Cinderella with Matthew Broderick that I love so very much even though it's not on your list that I could see. I kind of grew up watching that show, and Broderick is still my favorite version of Cinderella's prince. :)
