My 3 Favorite Austen Films

I finished my bridesmaid dress(!) and have time for a little more Austen loveliness for Naomi’s splendiferous party. :) As evidenced by the title, this one is highlighting my three top favorite Austen films. (And btw, just LOOK at how beautifully these three pictures go together. I can’t stop smiling about it!! ;))

My three favorites are…

~ Emma ’09 ~

~ P&P ’95 ~

(And I have no idea why I haven’t reviewed this one yet. Actually, I do know why and I would like to get to it eventually. In the meantime you can read my sister’s excellent review here if you like. ;))

Persuasion ‘07 ~

Gold, mint green, and the gray blue of the sea.... gorgeous, beautiful, romantic and realistic.... emotionally and mentally refreshing.... these three always leave me fully satisfied -- spinning with happiness!

Tell me! What are your three favorite JA films?

  1. I LOVE the first two on your list. As you know FULLY. :-D

As you know as *well*, I am not crazy about Persuasion. I DO love how you described it. "Gold - Mint Green - and the grey blue of the sea." That makes me like the movie more immediately!

Lovely post! And yes- THE PICTURES. They are adorable. :-)

Hee! Yes, I DO know. ;D *cough cough*

And oh, good -- I'm so glad it makes you like it a bit better! And thank you, I'm still just tickled about those pictures.... :)

  2. Just gorgeous, dear friend! So enjoyed the pictures...you've listed two if my favourites - I prefer Sense and Sensibility 09 to Persausion, and ADORE Pride and Prejudice - way prefer to old one with Colin Firth to the new one...and it is longer, too!{{smiles}}. Hugs to you, Heidi!

    1. Kelly-Anne,
Thank you!! And I was so very happy to hear your favorites. :) Yes, the '95 P&P is most delightfully long to settle down with for an entire afternoon. ;D Hugs to you, too!

  3. I love those three photos :) My top favorites are Sense and Sensibility 08, Emma 09, and Pride and Prejudice 05. I love S&S 08 because it's just so rich and beautiful, even though it's kind of "dark," but then the novel is "dark" too, so it kind of fits. And David Morrissey's Colonel Brandon is my favorite Austen hero EEEEEEEVER. :)

    1. jessica,
I'm so glad! Aren't they lovely? I do like Morrissey's rendition of Colonel Brandon quite a lot. I've seen the '08 S&S three times to date and I'm looking forward to seeing it again in a few weeks so when I do I'll definitely be thinking of you! ;D

  4. Congratulations on finishing your dress! If I may ask, what color is it?

Great choices! I can't say I'm surprised. ;) Although I did forget that you liked Emma '09 a lot. And I loved your description of Persuasion! -sigh- You make me want to watch it again. :)

    1. Natalie,
Thank you!!! ;) And yes, most certainly. It's a lovely sea foam-ish green cotton with darker teal tone-on-tone swirls. (The wedding colors are those shades of green along with a light rose and a deeper rose. I'm looking forward to seeing it all together!)

And oh dear dear.... you weren't surprised?!? I wonder why... ;) Let it also be known that the '96 Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow IS my fourth favorite period drama of all time (but I decided to stop at three as I thought that might swing it rather heavily Emma-ish :)).

    2. Heidi,
Ohhh that sounds beautiful!! And those wedding colors sound absolutely gorgeous. I'm sure it will be splendid!!

Haha, but wouldn't Emma herself be pleased if you did? :D

  5. My top favorites are Sense and Sensibility '08 (mah gash how I love it), Emma '09, and Pride and Prejudice '05. Same as Jessica. But we ARE sisters, I mean to say, what can one expect? :)

    1. Rosie,
When it comes to sisters... yes, indeed! ;) There are four of us at our house and for the most part I think we have the same solid favorites (to varying degrees of enthusiasm) on the Austen front. Very comfortable when it works so beautifully! ;)

  6. My top favorites are: Sense and Sensibility of '95 (two words: Alan Rickman), Pride and Prejudice (while I do enjoy the 95 version, I prefer the Kiera Knightley version... sorry) :), and Emma (but the 96 version with Gwyneth Paltrow... just beautiful. But I didn't know there was an 09 version, I must look into that).

I loved the book Persuasion, but have yet to see a movie version I find compelling.

    1. Jenelle Leanne,
The '95 S&S and Anne of Green Gables were the two "period dramas" I grew up watching before I knew such a definition existed! ;) And the '96 GP Emma was the version that made me love the story and is still my fourth favorite Austen of all time. So beautiful and refreshing -- I love it!! :)

  7. I have to see the 2007 Persuasion! Especially now that I know it's one of your favorites. Maybe Youtube or Netflix has it because I've already tried two libraries, and neither of them have it.

I really love the 2009 Emma, the 2005 and '95 Pride and Prejudice, and the 90's Sense and Sensibility with Emma Thompson. I had to put both versions of Pride and Prejudice. I like the 1995 one for it's accuracy, but I love the 2005 one because of it's artistry.

    2. It does--or it did this summer anyway :)

    3. Yes Youtube does have Persuasion 07, I just watched it today :D

    4. Oh, yeah, that's right, you did ;)

    5. Ekaterina,
I do hope you can see the '07 soon!! ;) I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's definitely a favorite of mine. And it seems like the more times I've watched it, the more I've come to appreciate it. :) (Hem! Though I did love certain things about it right from the beginning. ;D)

And yes! I'm a firm believer in the fact that you can have multiple favorite adaptations of the same story -- and I think it's so neat too, to see how different "new" adaptations borrow from and build on previous ones! :)

  8. My top 4 favorites are, Emma 09, P&P95, S&S 08, and Persuasion 07 :) I did have a few problems with Persuasion such as, Anne's hair (She isn't suppose to be ugly people! She actually is pretty when her hair isn't pulled back so tight), and her dresses! Seriously... her outfits. Whoever was in charge of them???? Anyways...I still love it :)

    1. Kristalyn,
I'm so glad you found me and commented! :) And we have three favorites in common! (And as I quite enjoy the '08 S&S the fourth point is utterly immaterial. ;) I can never seem to make up my mind which of the three S&S's I've seen is my "favorite.") And yes, I get what they were trying to do with Anne's hair, so that actually doesn't bother me quite as much as her gowns. I was thinking about it, though, and I think they must have been trying to show that Sir Walter was economizing on her. (Not to say I totally agree, as I think Anne would have made shift to alter her clothes, etc./have them done by someone else and Sir Walter himself would have too much family pride to want a member of his house appearing in ill fitting attire), but film wise I think it works okay. And as I love it to pieces regardless I'm quite willing to overlook it. ;D (Besides, then it just makes more wonderfulness on Captain Wentworth's part... ;))

  9. Must I choose three? Very well.

    1. Emma 1996 (Gwyneth Paltrow)
    2. Pride & Prejudice 2005
    3. Northanger Abbey 2007

If you'd like me to go on, then I would add:

    4. Sense and Sensibility 1995
    5. Persuasion 1995
    6. Pride and Prejudice 1995
    7. Persuasion 2007

    1. Hamlette,
Yes, I know. It's a harrowing decision. :P And I loved seeing your top seven!! Perfect. I love seeing them laid out like that. Yes, I knew the top two... and I'm not at all surprised about NA. :) (I need to see that one, btw. One of these days...)

The '95 Persuasion is #5 under S&S '95?? I didn't know that one. And yes on #6.... and you know how tingly happy I am to see that #7 popping up! ;D

    2. Well, the placings of #s 4 and 5 might partly be due to the fact that I just watched S&S95 last week, but I haven't seen Persuasion95 for like 2 years. It's also partly due to the fact that I like S&S95 better than the book, but P95 less than the book...

    3. Hamlette,
Okay, yes, that makes complete sense.... :)

  10. My top 3...boy, that's hard to pick only THREE of Jane Austen's!
    1. Pride and Prejudice (1995 - the BEST)
    2. Sense and Sensibility (1995 - I've not seen the newer version as of yet)
    3. I'm torn between Emma (2008) and Persuasion (2007). They're both so wonderful it's hard to pick!

I know.... ;) And ohhh, I was thrilled to see your picks!! Yes, yes, and YES! I'm grinning all over. :D (Okay, more splendid things to discuss -- I have a feeling some Austen related pictures will be appearing on Pinterest soon.... :))

  11. My three favorites are the 1995 Pride and Prejudice, the '95 Sense and Sensibility (this is in my top three feature films of all time as well)...and I think the '95 Persuasion just edges the Kate Beckinsale version of Emma for third place.

1995 was evidently a very good year for Jane Austen adaptations.

    1. Elisabeth Grace Foley,
I'm so happy to get your comment! Yes, while S&S isn't among my tip-top three favs, I always tend to think of the '95 P&P and the '95 S&S as being the first two JA period dramas to recommend to almost anyone just dipping into the genre; one longer and one shorter and both very quintessential.

(A side note: whenever I see the Beckinsale version of Emma, I always end up wanting to write a prequel -- and sequel -- with Frank and Jane's story. I think they're my favorite Frank and Jane of all the adaptations. :))
