Period Drama Challenge Tag Answers ~ January 2016

My answers for Miss Laurie's January Period Drama Tag:

1. What period dramas did you view in January?
Amazing Grace, Cinderella 2015, Ever After, a couple episodes of Lark Rise, The Story of Alexander Graham Bell (1939), Much Ado About Nothing (1987), and several Thin Man mysteries (set in the 30’s and 40’s).

2. What is your favorite Charles Dickens film adaptation?
I haven’t seen a tremendous lot, but -- thus far -- probably Nicholas Nickleby (2002).

3. Would you rather visit Pemberley (Mr. Darcy's residence) or Downton Abbey (Crawley family residence)? Why?
As in ‘visiting it as a character'? Then Pemberly, because of Reasons. :) Actually, to be completely honest, I haven’t seen any Downton Abbey (for Other Reasons), but I’m pretty sure my choice would remain the same.

4. If you could be any character in a Jane Austen novel for a whole day who would you be and why would you want to be that character?
Oh, wow. A hard one! Let's see. Probably Anne Elliot at the very end of Persuasion. Talk about exhilarating! (LATER EDIT: with the proviso, of course, that I could then stay on as Anne. ;))

5. What period dramas are you looking forward to viewing in February 2016?
Shadow on the Mesa (a western I’ve already reviewed here), The Magic of Ordinary Days, and The Mark of Zorro (1940).

Note also: if you haven't entered the challenge yet, you can still join in over on Miss Laurie's blog here! :)

Tell me! Have you seen any of those I mentioned?

  1. I would just LOVE to be Anne Elliot at the end of Persuasion. I mean . . . I MEAN . . . Peak of earthly happiness, what? ;-)

Have you ever watched the "Jeeves and Wooster" TV show, with Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry? One of the houses in the show, Totleigh Towers, is the exact same location used for the set of Downton Abbey. (Weird, huh?)

    2. jessica,
YES! And I actually added a qualifier to the post. ;) (To wit, it's dependent on if I could go on being her. I mean. . . just imagine having to come back! ;))

And yes, I have and remember!! :)

    3. Naomi,
Hee. Isn't it fun when that happens?? And I think I love it even more when it happens with dresses, too. :)

  3. 1. How did you like Lark Rise? Are you watching it through or just randomly?

    2. Oh, I've seen that Nicholas Nickleby. We call it "The Cousins' Nicholas Nickleby" because it was our cousins who showed it to us. Haha. :) I want to watch it again sometime because I watched it before seeing Amazing Grace and Emma, and now I really want to see Romola Garai as Kate.

    4. Oh yes! At the end of the book! That would be the happiest day ever!

    1. Miss March,
Well. . . I've been fairly busy on other projects and thus simply haven't got terribly terribly drawn into Lark Rise yet, but my mother and two of my sisters are (pretty much) hugely enjoying it. :D And yes, they're watching through in order -- I'm pretty sure they're in the third season.

That's funny! ;) I also actually own that NN so really have no excuse not to give it another rewatch one of these days!

And yes! Wouldn't it be positively lovely? :)

  4. Hee! We chose the same person and the same part of the book for our Austen answer :-D

I LOVE the Thin Man movies! I should totally review some for this! Nick and Nora are one of my favorite couples ever.

Your Mark of Zorro shot is making me giggle. Diego looks so droll there! I should go to bed. But it's been such a productive evening! Still, when I stop being able to remember Tyrone Power's name (literally had to go look it up on IMDB right now because I could only think of Jamie Boy, which is what I generally call him in my head, but still, I *ought* to be able to remember his real name, oughtn't I?) I'm probably overtired and should sleep.

    1. Hamlette,
      VERY funny, isn't it?!? ;)

And YES! I think we discovered them just before Christmas and then got the pack with the first four off Amazon as a family present. I haven't watched the entire second one yet, but I think I've seen each of the others twice already. :) AND I LOVE THEM! Nick and Nora are just the absolute best. :)

*grins* I made you giggle? Splendid! I wasn't sure if it would seem as funny if people hadn't seen it, but seriously. . . his face. And Basil Rathbone. It makes me happy all over.

    2. Nick and Nora are a continual delight. An instance of me far preferring the movie to the book.

His face! Exactly. He's just so hilarious int hat movie, always looking so blandly innocent, but also so mischievous at the same time -- love him!

    1. Natalie!
Well, I can actually put you immediately out of your suspense. ;) I've already seen The Magic (we own it, so quite a lot of times, in fact) and LOVE it, so now the review is pretty much a labor of love. ;D I'm currently about exactly halfway through and getting ready to start figuring out all the pictures soon -- yay! I really can't wait to hear what you think of it!! ;D

    2. Oh, you have?? How wonderful! Isn't it just the sweetest thing?? Well. We can save our conversation about it for your review post. ;) I can't wait to read your thoughts on it!

I'd love to hear your thoughts and look forward to further confabulation. Please just be courteous to one and all. Oh, and I love thoughts on old posts, so comment away!

(Also of late -- what with time being finite, and Life Happening + managing multiple blogs and computer issues and all that -- I sometimes have to alternate between creating new content and replying to comments, but rest assured I'm thrilled to hear from each and every one of you and always hope to reply thoughtfully in full ASAP. <3)
