Period Drama Challenge Tag Answers ~ February 2016

February Tag Questions:

(Note: these are for Miss Laurie's Period Drama Film Challenge, which you can enter here.)

1. What period dramas did you view in February?
It wasn't a big movie month this time around, but let's see...

I Dream of Jeanie (1952)

Judge Priest (1934)

A few scenes my sister was watching from the 1971 BBC Persuasion mini-series...

And (of course), The Magic of Ordinary Days (2005).

2. What is your favorite period drama musical?

The Music Man (2003) with Matthew Broderick and Kristin Chenoweth. I also like Anchors Aweigh (1945), Singin' in the Rain, and the live 2013 Sound of Music quite well.

3. If you could order up an adaptation of your favorite classic book, what would it be and who would star?

Well... besides Gaskell's N&S (which in itself is darker compared to some others) and all of Austen's books, my favorite classics are more along the lines of Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment and Conrad's Heart of Darkness, of which I'm not positive I want to see films ;), so we'll go with something else. Again, it's not my very favoritest book of all time, but a Little Women mini-series (taking time to go into more things and particularly expanding on Amy's adventures as well) would be most interesting. I've thought of Roger Hamley (with a beard) from Wives and Daughters for Mr. Bhaer and I think Keira Knightley could make an excellent Jo.

4. If you could be a famous royal from history, who would you be and why?

From everything I've read thus far -- life and character-wise -- I think May of Teck (i.e. Queen Mary of England) would be tremendously intriguing.

5. What period dramas are you looking forward to viewing in March 2016?

The 1940 Mark of Zorro.  (For various sundry and exciting reasons... ;D)

  1. I LOVE that you and I both chose The Music Man as our favorite period musical! Of course, you kinda introduced me to it, so I really have you to thank or I likely never would have found it! ;)

I can see Keira Knightley as Jo March. In fact, I think that would be lovely.

I haven't watched the 1940 Mark of Zorro in at least a decade. I should probably give it another try.

    1. Rilla,
Yay for another Zorro fan!! ;) And isn't that picture just too cute? I love it! :)

I Dream of Jeanie is actually based on the life of the 19th century folk songwriter Stephen Foster (his early writing years, that is, so it ends just before he gets married). As far as "content" goes, I can definitely recommend it. It gets slightly intense towards the end where he's despairing about his abilities for a while, but it's mostly the music, etc. And throughout there's no suggestiveness and no "scenes" whatsoever. It's a leetle slow in places (mostly just this big minstrel show in the middle), but it also has some delightfully fun and charming moments, too. Let me know if you're able to see it!

  3. Keira Knightley would make a wonderful Jo March! I would be most excited to watch such a miniseries :-) Here's hoping . . .

I'm very fond of Queen Mary--that's an excellent choice, Heidi! Apart from everything else, her sheer longevity is amazing; she was a child during Queen Victoria's reign and lived well past WWII. She saw a lot of changes during her lifetime, that's for sure :-)

    1. jessica,
I KNOW. Wouldn't she?!? And me, too. ;)

Thank you! I've always found Queen Mary's life and times fascinating and I'd really like to read more on her eventually...

  4. Oh, yes, yes! A Little Women mini-series! We need one of those! And definitely one that takes time to expand on Amy's story...and Meg's, too. I love the parts with Meg and John after they're married. That would so cool to see in a movie, wouldn't it?

    1. Lois,
*smiles all over about Mark of Zorro...* And yes, you DO need to see the '03 Music Man! Promptly. (Actually, due to setting it's a great one to see in the summer months, too. ;D)

  6. Have you seen the Little Women series from 1978, I think it is? I caught the end of it on late night TV once, (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078643/) Thought it looked awful at first but it turned out to be not bad, and it puts in lots of bits not in the film, like Jo and Beth going to stay at the seaside :) Some weird casting though, William Shatner is Professor Bhaer!

No, I haven't seen the 1978 version, but I'd really like to! I've heard it's way better than might be expected. Off to see if I can possibly find and bookmark it... :)

Wouldn't it be lovely? And I just checked and found out our library has the '78 miniseries, too, so now I'm really looking forward to seeing that in the next couple months. We shall see!

  9. Keira Knightley as Jo? I would love that! Let's find a good fairy and make it so.

I'm actually thinking of showing Tyrone's Zorro to my kids soon :-) It's just so delicious!

Yes, indeedy! (Now how should we start going about that? :))

And ooooh, super excited about the little people seeing TP's Zorro! *coughs* I'm actually thinking of possibly watching it later this week for Certain Reasons... but my schedule's still rather nebulous. ;)
